We love it when you smile

Hurrah, Banzai,

Your Toshiba PDA can now be fixed.

So like me you have just received a box like the one shown here, Toshiba Service department have tried to charge you close on 200 pounds (300 euros) to fix a PocketPC almost or already out of guarantee, when you can probably buy a new one for a few pounds more (or less), on declining their generous offer, and they gleefully tell you that you cannot buy them from third parties. Their lemma "We love it when you smile" was certainly lost on me.

Well they are right, I've tried phoning NEC touch panel importers (Toshiba use NEC panels) and they tell me that they are not available outside of the far east, and I imagine even there you need to buy in quantity.

Yet there is good news, there are touch panels that share dimensions, and tail positions, and one of those is the screen for the XDA (Sold in the UK as the O2 XDA or BT Cellnet that was, and in Germany with T-mobile branding), which is available.

So, am I saying that the XDA touch panel screen fits the Toshiba e310? (I talk about other models later), well kind of, electrically - yes, physically the screen - yes, but there are two problems,

First the serious one, the length of the tail coming from the XDA screen is 17mm short.

17mm short
Conductive bar

And the second much less important and sadly unfixable, a hardly noticeable conductive bar, which on the XDA with its smaller screen aperture would not be visible.

So the length of the tail, can you fix it? Yes, read on....
